In order to ensure that the company pursues a clear unmet need, that the profile of the projects support these needs and that the development strategy is sufficient for regulatory approval while moving to market as fast as possible, a Pain Management Advisory Board has been established.

The board consists of renowned experts within pain management and opioids in particular as well as expertise within gastrointestinal absorption and pharmacokinetics.

 

Professor Henrik Kehlet,
Head of Section of Surgical Pathophysiology, Rigshospitalet.

Henrik Kehlet, M.D., PhD, was previously professor of Surgery at Copenhagen University, Department of Gastro-Intestinal Surgery, Hvidovre Hospital and since 2004 Head of Section for Surgical Pathophysiology, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen University and professor of Perioperative Therapy, Copenhagen University. Henrik Kehlet's clinical and scientific interests have focused on improving surgical outcome with a focus on pathophysiological responses to surgery (stress responses, pain, fatigue, immuno-function, fluid management, minimal invasive surgery), all leading to the concept of fast-track surgery being a multi-modal combination of evidence-based, uni-modal interventions in order to enhance recovery and decrease morbidity. Hernia surgery has been a specific clinical and scientific interest leading to the establishment of a nation-wide Danish hernia database in 1998. Henrik Kehlet has received numerous awards/honorary lectures including honorary fellowships of American College of Surgeons and the German Surgical and Anaesthesiological Societies and a fellowship at the Royal College of Anaesthetists in England. He has more than 700 scientific publications. Current research interests focus on further improvements of the individual components of "fast-track surgery" in a procedure-specific set-up and acute pain pathophysiology and treatment with a focus on the transition from acute to chronic pain.

Dr. Clive G. Wilson, Ph.D.

Dr. Wilson's major areas of research have concerned the study of the behaviour of drug formulations in man. With Dr. John Hardy in Medical Physics at Queen's Medical Centre and later Professor Davis in Pharmacy at Nottingham, the three pioneered applications of scintigraphy in the study of physiological and patho-physiological effects of transit on drug absorption. These interests have continued at Glasgow through a network of worldwide collaborations. Currently the Strathclyde group are using optosensor technology for direct drug measurements in the eye and have gathered a group of physicists, engineers, pharmacists and surgeons across central Scotland collaborating in a programme on ocular drug delivery and imaging. In gastroenterological research, Wilson's group have initiated the use of magnetic moment imaging (MMI) to complement scintigraphic measurements carried out at BioImages Research Ltd., a clinical facility located in Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Dr. Wilson recently completed a two-year sabbatical as professor-in-residence at GlaxoSmithKline sites in Harlow, the US and Verona working on physical properties of new chemical entities and biopharmaceutics issues in formulation development.

Nils Hoem, M.Sc (pharm), PhD
Vice President Pharma, Aker BioMarine.

Nils Hoem is an expert in pharmacokinetics and pharmacokinetic modeling, with a special interest in population pharmacokinetics and individualized dosing. He has several years of experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry as well as in academic institutions.
Dr. Hoem held a position as Associate Professor in Pharmacology at the University of Oslo from 1989-2002, and served as European Director of Pharmacokinetic Modeling, Statistics and Data Management at MDS Pharma Services in Hamburg and Belfast from 2004 to 2007. At present, he holds a position as Vice President Pharma at Aker BioMarine in Oslo. He has worked as an independent consultant in pharmacokinetics and has as such directed long-term extensive pharmacokinetics development programs.
As part of his professional efforts, he served as a member of the Norwegian Medicines Approval Committee from 1991 to 1996. Dr. Hoem has been a member of the Laboratory of Applied Pharmacokinetics at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles since the mid 1990ties, and has as such actively participated in the research and development programs of this institution. Dr. Hoem’s bibliography lists over 40 publications and reports.

Professor Eija Anneli Kalso,
Professor of Pain Research and Management, University of Helsinki and Head of the Pain Clinic, Department of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine and Pain Medicine, Helsinki University Central Hospital.

Professor Eija Kalso has more than 30 years of experience within the fields of Anaesthesiology and Pain Management.
In April 1976 she became a candidate in Medicine from the University of Helsinki. She became a Specialist in Anaesthesiology in July 1986 and a Docent in Anaesthesiology in May 1992; furthermore, she has a degree in Special Competence in Pain Management (January 1999).
Previous professional appointments include among many others Head of the Pain Clinic, Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, Helsinki University Central Hospital; Senior lecturer and Consultant in Anaesthesiology, Karolinska Institute, Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Huddinge University Hospital Sweden; appointed as Professor and Chairman, Dept. of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, University of Turku.
